The Matrix - Breathe In Deeper Now (2007)

This was another Pinnacle video I had started before the Evil video contest, and I finally got around to semi-finishing it after my move to LA (It was actually completing while living on Nick's floor pre-first job in the initial weeks, yay for downtime). Some of the same flaws are apparent (overabundance of cross-cutting between two periods, linear storytelling, ect.), but the biggest noticeable flaw is readily apparent, and actually, not really something I could control at the time. The greenish pall that inexplicably appears throughout was a weird thing that happened when I tried to insert a fade effect into the timeline. It looked fine while in the Pinnacle monitor, but when I tried to render and export the thing it gave me weirdness, and no matter what I tried I couldn't get it to work. By that time though, I was pretty much done with that program and ready to move on to Avid Media Composer, so I ended up filing the video away, never intending for it to see the light of day. But I thought it was worth showing now even with the technical errors.

And, looking at it today, the hues actually work with the green lettering of the Matrix, so in that way, its kinda cool.

Evil (A Chorus of Resistance) (2007)

Contest entry for rock band Project 86's album release of Rival Factions for the single "Evil." I did it right at the end of college in 2007 before moving to LA, before I was using Avid (this was done on Pinnacle 9, the last time I think I used it in a completed video). I thought it was better than the entry that won, but hey, why wouldn't I? Even though I used Pinnacle, in this one, I seemed to have a better overall idea to what I was trying to do (even though there are definitely shots I would moved around, there was generally a bit too much cross-cutting between the two subjects of the piece).

The Punisher - Ready To Fall (2006)

Wow, where to begin? Coming off the Superman Trailer which I really liked this was a big disappointment. It was the second video I did, but thats no excuse. Sloppy all around, bad cuts generally till the end, the story was told in a very linear way (these things need to be intercut throughout, thats the advantage of a trailer-type video, it doesn't have to re-hash the film's story chronologically, it can jump around to the exciting bits). And speaking of exciting, or the lack of excitement, I'm remembering now why the first half or so of these videos up till now are kinda dull. One of the limitations (or maybe there was a function for this that I just didn't figure out at the time) with Pinnicle 9 was you couldn't go into the timeline and lift out a chunk, to later be replaced by something else. This meant that when I put in a shot, and then moved on, I was pretty much locking myself in to whatever had been assembled up to that point. There was no roughly finishing the trailer, examining the whole thing, and then going in and tinkering here and there. Instead, when I got to the end, I basically was at the end, unless I wanted to start the whole thing over. And since these are for nothing but fun and experience, that was the last thing I wanted to do. One of the countless reasons the jump to Avid was great.

Strangely this video has one of the highest likes to dislikes ratios of all my videos on Youtube, and has the second highest number of views. Go figure.

I'm actually kinda proud of this one. It was my first time trying to really edit something and considering my inexperience, I thought it turned out kinda ok (that being said I would completely redo the first verse and make that a lot more exciting, although I think that particular film may have run out of exciting parts to use by then anyways... oh well. Some of the cuts are off-beat too, especially at the beginning, which looking back really bugs me). Pinnacle 9 was used, not the first time, not the last time.
